Hi again!
I had an idea for a song which lasted exactly a minute - to the millisecond. I wanted it to count its own lifespan too, which meant a metronomic tick-tock, one per second, in 4/4 time... that's 60 over 4... er, 15 bars in which to say it all.
I even put 'Westminster Chimes' in, to mark each quarter minute as it passed..aah...
'It all' it transpires, is saying I have no time and then to merely hint at what I would have said had I more time to play with. The song also disparages the 'must have a video' of all current popular music: today a song is not enough in itself it seems, and needs visual explanation/stimulus to make the experience valid, whole and worthwhile.
This mind-set makes music into a 'comic book' (as opposed to the 'novella' of my youthful listenings: songs by the Beatles, Kinks, Small Faces, Beach Boys - too many to mention), removing the need for the listener to think or visualise for themselves, plus assuring that those with a short attention span and no imagination will see it through to the end. This is a self-perpetuating and disturbing trend; brash, crass, instantly forgettable TV, violent instant-fix computer games, trashy media of every kind, are all that will soon be able to engage people who are only exposed to this 'culture' - and only then for a shorter and shorter spell. So the 'One minute song', with speeded up, bright, flashy, violent video is possibly our future entertainment.
If I could have afforded a video I wouldn't have needed to say all that - damn economic limitations - I would have spelled it all out darkly, shockingly and disturbingly, probably in black and white...
A minute's all I have today: I have to go to work soon. Have a good weekend - Al
